21 before 21

The past week was so good. I went home for Easter Break so it was like a second Spring Break. I ate way too much candy and food in general. But it was nice to be home and be with family. And my family met my sister’s boyfriend for the first time (we all approve).  Being home also made me start thinking about the future. I mean as close as three weeks and as far away as three years! I’ll be done with my freshmen year(!) in three weeks so I’m starting to pack up my room. As for the three years part, I’m just excited about all of it. So I made a list of 21 things I want to do before my 21st birthday. It’s the same concept as 101 in 1001, I just don’t think I can think of 101 things or accomplish them in 1001 days. So here’s my 21 before 21 list!

21 Before 21

1.       Go to a Frat party- just to say I’ve been.
2.    Go to a midnight premiere.
3.   Kiss at midnight on New Year’s.
4.   Ride on the Eye of London.
5.    Spend the whole day in a library or bookstore reading.
6.    Make a meal for my friends or family or both.
7.    Treat myself to a date night.
8.    Try a new restaurant every weekend.
9.    Give a 100% tip.
10.  Start a blog.
11.     Run another 5K or a 10K.
12.  Learn how to work Photoshop or Photoshop like product.
13.  Get a tattoo.
14. Learn how to cook at least 5 different meals.
15.  Learn to crochet-to relax.
16.  Finish Cloud Atlas, Anna Karenina and East of Eden. (I like big booksJ)
17.   Learn to surf.
18.  Meet Josh Dumal. (Since I live in Minot and he’s from here…)
19.   Go skinny-dipping.
20.                 Have my makeup professionally done. (Either for a special event or just because.)
21.  Ask a guy to go on a date. (I think this is really empowering!)

As you can see, I've crossed some things off already (like starting this blog!). I'll be crossing off #13 on May 2nd. Wish me luck! Oh, and happy Earth Week!

Top 5 Lady Crushes

So I thought it would be nice to do kind of a silly blog post this week. Life seems to be giving me the cold shoulder lately (it is snowing outside as I type this) with tests, not so nice weather, and getting ready for the end of the school year. I’ve been feeling foggy so I keep reminding myself that there are many great things on the horizon. Always trying to stay positive.

So, lady crushes. What are those? They are the crushes girls have on other girls but we don’t really want to date them. Instead we want to best friends with them. My lady crushes are women who inspire me, make me want to be a better person and remind me that everyone has flaws. The order of my lady crushes is not set in stone and changes a lot but these five women are always on the list.

1.     Jennifer Lawerence- I think Jennifer Lawrence is on everyone’s crush list because she is so real and gorgeous. She is my lady crush because she isn’t afraid to be herself to anyone. Also she is constantly talking about how she won’t accept Hollywood’s standard of beauty. She knows she is beautiful and she isn’t a size 0. I definitely agree with her on that and I think she is a great role model for girls of today’s society.

2.     Emma Watson- Emma is my lady crush because she is brilliant, shy, and modest. She managed to stay grounded while playing Hermoine in the Harry Potter movies, which are probably the most well known movies of today. I admired how she focused on school while she filmed too. She studied at Brown University and has a degree in literature. I also love how Emma is modest in her style too. One of my favorite quotes from her is “The less you reveal the more people can wonder.” Which is so true! I don’t need to wear a mini skirt and a spaghetti strap tank top to get attention.

3.     Natalie Portman- Some facts about Natalie Portman: She is fluent in 6 languages, graduated from Harvard with an A. B. in psychology, has been published twice in scientific journals, and was a guest speaker at Columbia University on terrorism and counterterrorism. So in other words, she is brilliant. That is the main reason she is one of my lady crushes. Not because she is gorgeous and a fabulous actress but she is intelligent. And intelligence is important to me. I don’t just want a good-looking crush; I want one that I can have a debate with. One last reason Natalie is one of my lady crushes; she has a wicked sense of humor.

4.     Audrey Hepburn- Audrey is probably my favorite role model and I try to be as classy and elegant as her (key word: try). She was a beautiful person inside and out. She represented some of the best things in life and it was a tragedy when she died. Audrey is famous for acting in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Roman Holiday, and Funny Face. She was classy, sophisticated and generous. I really admire how Audrey always looked poised when she was out in public. What I love the most about Audrey is how she gave up acting so she could have a safe, healthy pregnancy and raise her son. Then she became an ambassador for UNICEF where she spent most of her time in Africa, South America and Asia. Audrey Hepburn will always be on my lady crush list for so many reasons.

5.     Elizabeth Gilbert- Author of “Eat, Pray, Love,” and the sequel “Committed,” I basically want to grow up to be Elizabeth Gilbert. Travel throughout Southeastern Asia and Europe? Yes please! Go on a life-changing journey that overall makes me love myself 100%? Again, yes! Become a famous writer and be able to go anywhere I want? Have I gotten my point across? Don’t get me wrong; I know Elizabeth has gone through some really rocky times in her life. But she showed me how strong you can be when you have no other option. And how sometimes, you need to share your burdens with those you love. Elizabeth Gilbert is one of my favorite authors and I envy all of her travels. I think it would be so cool to sit down with her for coffee and talk about everything. Elizabeth Gilbert inspires me to love myself more, to love others, and to travel every inch of this glorious earth.

Spring Break in Hawaii!

Oh my gosh, it's been a while. Sorry about that. Life has been super busy and I've been trying to stay on top of my homework. I figured I should probably do a post about how much fun Hawaii was. Seriously you guys, can I move there? The coldest it ever gets is 75 degrees fahrenheit! That sounds amazing compared to North Dakota, where the coldest it can get is like -75. And everything is beautiful in Hawaii. Ugh, I'm still day dreaming about it.

So we spent three days on Oahu and four days on Hawaii. In Oahu we stayed on this beautiful resort. The beach was only a minute away and there was so much to do! Of course my sister and I got burnt on the first day (#NDwhitegirlproblems), so we had to avoid the sun for like three days. We walked around the resort and just hung out in the room. One of my best friends was also in Hawaii with her family so I hung out with her. I bought some souvenirs for myself and my friends. I had to buy 100% Kona coffee because it is so good! If I could drink Kona coffee all the time I would. And I bought chocolate covered macadamia nuts. Those didn't last very long. We also went to Pearl Harbor and on a tour of the city of Honolulu.

This is a picture of my sister and I with the statue of one of the kings. Thankfully you can't tell how badly sunburnt we were!

When we went to Hawaii, we went to the World Botanical Gardens. Everything there is lush. There are plants from all over the world, even cacti! We hiked about three or four miles throughout the area. When you think about Hawaii, you think about all these beautiful flowers and all kinds of plants. If you ever go to Hawaii I definitely recommend you go to the World Botanical Gardens. Be cautious on the road that goes through the middle of the island, it can get kind of rough.

This was my favorite flower throughout the whole Botanical Gardens. It's a little puff ball!

It is mandatory to go to a luau in Hawaii and if you don't you seriously miss out! The luau we went to was amazing. The food was delicious and the entertainment was better than I ever expected. There were so many dancers and different types of dances. The luau was one of the best parts of the trip in my opinion.

This was the opening of the luau. It was a show about the kings and queens of the island of Hawaii.

Hawaii was so much fun and I hope my family and I go back soon. Next time I will learn how to surf and paddle board. Maybe I'll add swimming with dolphins and turtles to my list. Sorry it took me so long to make a new post, I'll try harder to be more consistent in my writing. Have a good one people! =)
